Air Quality Awareness Week is May 2-6

Statewide, Wyo. – The Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) – Air Quality Division (AQD) is joining the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Weather Service in commemorating May 2 to May 6, 2016, as Air Quality Awareness Week.

The week will provide informative opportunities for Wyoming’s citizens to learn more about the state’s air quality and how it pertains to our day-to-day lives.

In the community spirit of the Cowboy State, DEQ is reaching out to Wyoming residents with tips on what each of us can do to help preserve and maintain Wyoming’s clean air.

“The Air Quality Division has a responsibility to the people of Wyoming, and we are constantly aware of the importance of keeping our State informed on air quality issues,” said Nancy Vehr, AQD Administrator. “Maintaining clean air is something that benefits everyone in the State because it ensures the high quality of life we’ve come to know and appreciate in Wyoming.”

The national theme for 2016 is “Show How You Care About the Air” – and  DEQ is bringing that message to the forefront of its Wyoming campaign.

Wyoming residents are encouraged to consider small daily habits – such as idling vehicles less, properly maintaining vehicles in order to improve fuel efficiency, and/or carpooling – that not only have positive air quality impacts, but also can result in hundreds of dollars of savings each year.

DEQ has a list of tips that residents can undertake for each day of Air Quality Awareness Week to continue to uphold Wyoming’s reputation for having some of the nation’s cleanest air.

“A key part of our identity is to take care of our state,” said Vehr. “Using these tips will continue to help us preserve outstanding air in Wyoming for future generations to come.”

Cheyenne and Casper, the state’s two most populous cities, were recently recognized among the nation’s best areas for low year-round particle pollution.

“Wyoming has a reputation of being a leader in implementing programs that protect air quality in Wyoming and our neighboring states,” said Todd Parfitt, DEQ Director. “Wyoming’s industry and residents can be proud of the efforts made that ensure clean air for all those who live and visit our great state.”
