DEQ to host Kick-off Meeting to begin work on developing Nutrient Strategy

The Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), Water Quality Division (WQD) is inviting the public, interested organizations, and state and federal agencies to participate in an effort to address nutrients entering Wyoming’s surface waters.

Phosphorus and nitrogen are two important nutrients that can cause excessive growth of algae and plants in Wyoming’s rivers and lakes and have the potential to impact recreational uses, fisheries, drinking water supplies, and other uses of surface waters.

“Development of a strategy to address nutrient pollution makes sense and is the right thing to do to protect the quality of Wyoming’s rivers, lakes and streams.” said Todd Parfitt, DEQ Director.

A kick-off meeting to begin work on developing the nutrient strategy will take place on April 5, 2016 from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Herschler Building in Cheyenne. The meeting will provide background information on nutrient pollution, outline potential components of a strategy,  and establish work groups to assist with development of key elements of the strategy.

“The cooperation and participation of interested stakeholders and the public in assisting DEQ with development of the nutrient strategy is an important step in protecting the water quality of our lakes and rivers” said Kevin Frederick, WQD Administrator. “DEQ encourages all interested members of the public to participate in this effort.”

For those persons unable to attend the April 5, 2016 meeting in person, DEQ will provide webinar access. If you are interested in participating or have questions regarding this effort, please contact Lindsay Patterson at 307-777-7079 or Lindsay.Patterson@wyo.gov.
