DEQ recognizes Target Stores in Casper and Cheyenne for Environmental Stewardship

Target Stores in Casper and Cheyenne are being recognized by the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Environmental Stewardship Program for innovative voluntary efforts to reduce the amount of hazardous waste that enters local landfills and is misidentified for destruction by company personnel.

The two stores are being recognized after recent inspections were completed by the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality Solid and Hazardous Waste Division.  These inspections identified best management practices that allowed all individuals within the store to scan any bar-code and determine whether the product scanned was classified as hazardous materials or not.  These efforts reduce the amount of misidentified contaminants from entering local landfills and also from being placed with other potentially hazardous chemicals.

Other notable pollution prevention efforts include:

  • the re-use and salvage of products that would otherwise be discarded to local landfills;
  • and the removal of in-store photo developing machines that created waste from photo developing chemicals.

Because of these efforts, Target will be recognized with the Wyoming Environmental Stewardship Program Outstanding Business of the Quarter award for the period of January – March  2016.  This award is given to businesses that promote and find innovative ways to reduce the environmental impacts of business practices.

“It is great to see our compliance and inspection team recognizing the innovative ways that businesses are finding to reduce their impacts on the environment,” Landon Brown, Pollution Prevention Program.  “Target has displayed innovative, cheap, and efficient ways to reduce environmental impacts that many businesses can take and utilize.”
