DEQ to recognize Simon Contractors with Environmental Stewardship Award

On July 19, 2016, the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) will be recognizing Simon Contractors Company of Cheyenne, WY with the 2016 2nd Quarter Environmental Stewardship Award.

The award is given to companies that are nominated by DEQ staff for voluntary efforts to reduce environmental impacts while conducting business. This is the first such award for Simon Contractors.

Simon Contractors Company was chosen through a competitive process and ultimately the award was chosen by the Wyoming Compliance Advisory Panel (CAP).  This panel is comprised of business and public representatives that represent multiple areas of business interests throughout the state.

Simon Contractors recently invested time, money, and effort into multiple projects at their facilities throughout Wyoming to reduce their impacts.  Many of these impacts were to improve air quality, specifically particulate matter (PM) and fugitive emissions related to the operation of the concrete and asphalt operations.

“As a company, Simon Contractors recognizes the majesty and delicate nature of the environment in which we live, work and hope to enjoy for years to come,” said Buddy League, President for Simon Contractors. “We have always strived to operate, maintain and upgrade our facilities as well as perform our work in such a way that protects the safety and quality of our environment. We are pleased to accept the Environmental Stewardship award from the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality and appreciate the partnership our organizations have in working toward a common purpose that affects us all.”

The company recently spent over a half million dollars in equipment upgrades to reduce their emissions.  These measures were taken proactively and were not required by permit or rule.  A few of the controls that were put in place include updating scrubber systems and improving dust collection as well as installation of a shut off valve for silo and truck filling to reduce over-filling of the silo.

“I’m pleased with the CAP’s decision for the Environmental Stewardship Award.  This was not an easy decision and all of the nominations were highly regarded,” said Landon Brown Pollution Prevention Coordinator. “Ultimately, it was the impressive measures taken by Simon Contractors to reduce emissions at such a large level that proved to be the deciding factor.”

Brown will be presenting the award to Simon Contractors at 10:00 AM at the companies Cheyenne Regional Office, 1103 Old Town Lane, Suite 201A.
