On Tuesday, March 28, 2017, the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) will host a public meeting to present groundwater cleanup and remediation project plans regarding a historical Perchloroethylene (PCE) plume in the Casper area.
The Casper PCE Plumes orphan site is approximately 150 acres in an area that originates on the southern end of downtown Casper, and travels north-northeast until it reaches the North Platte River.
The area is comprised of residential, commercial and industrial neighborhoods. Environmental testing in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s revealed the presence of PCE in groundwater in downtown Casper, North Casper and in the indoor air of some homes.”DEQ has conducted numerous investigations and collected sufficient data where we now feel confident enough to begin treating the plume,” said Matt Buchholz, DEQ Project Manager. “We have worked with local businesses to ensure there are no longer any releases of PCE.”
The department believes the plume is adequately delineated and characterized, a necessary step in order to effectively remediate the PCE contamination.
“Our goal is to inform the public about what we are doing to treat the groundwater plume associated with the Casper Orphan Site,” added Buchholz “We plan on discussing information about the plume, the methods we are planning on using to treat the plume, and the timeframes associated with the project.”
The meeting will begin at 7:00 PM at the UW Agricultural Extension Building, 2011 Fairground Road.
