On Friday, April 12, 2019, the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) filed a Notice of Violation with Maverik Inc. regarding the recent release of gasoline from their Maverick Country Store #389 in Lander, WY.
Since April 3, staff from DEQ, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), and local emergency responders have been working to keep gasoline from impacting the nearby river and investigating the source of the contamination.
After conducting numerous tests and reviewing inventory records, DEQ believes that Maverik overfilled one of the gasoline underground storage tanks at the facility. The overfill resulted in the release of gasoline that impacted the Popo Agie River.
The company has been ordered to stop operation of the affected gasoline underground storage tanks until the necessary repairs are made to prevent the further release of gasoline.
Additionally, the facility has received a “Red Tag Order” which prohibits from receiving any fuel to these tanks.
DEQ will be working to ensure the station makes all necessary repairs to the facility and cleanup of the contaminated area is implemented.
