PFAS
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), sometimes referred to as “forever chemicals,” are a large class of human-made chemicals with carbon-fluorine bonds known for their:
- Widespread use in industry, consumer products, and certain firefighting foams;
- Potential to accumulate and persist in people and the environment; and
- Potential to impact human health and the environment.
WDEQ’s initial efforts to address PFAS in Wyoming have primarily focused on:
- Identifying potential sources;
- Monitoring drinking water; and
- Working with partners to address contaminated drinking water.
WDEQ is working collaboratively with stakeholders to develop and implement a Wyoming PFAS Strategy that will identify priorities to:
- Minimize human and animal exposure to PFAS;
- Limit the amount of PFAS entering the environment;
- Address PFAS-contaminated sites; and
- Conduct education and outreach to support these efforts.
